Exploring Minnesota Through Hands-On Learning
What an exciting time we've had at Little Wild Roots this past month as we explored the beauty and wonders of our great state—Minnesota! This past week, our young learners dove into hands-on experiences that deepened their connection to the land they call home. From investigating Lake Superior agates to discovering Minnesota’s lakes, fish, and state bird, the loon, our students engaged in meaningful learning that blended science, storytelling, creativity, and outdoor exploration.
Uncovering the Beauty of Agates
One of the highlights of our unit was studying the Lake Superior Agate. Students used their investigative skills to closely examine these special stones, looking for the intricate colors and bands hidden inside. Using magnifying glasses, they discovered the tiny crystals that make up agates and felt the different textures of the stones. This lesson tied beautifully into our read-aloud, “Agate”, a heartwarming story about a moose who learns that true beauty is found within. Our students made connections between the story and their own lives, realizing that just like an agate, every person is unique and valuable in their own way.
Diving Into Minnesota’s Lakes and Wildlife
Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and we took time to appreciate just how important our waterways are. Students were introduced to a variety of fish species that call our lakes home, from tiny sunfish to massive sturgeon. Conversations about fishing sparked lively discussions, with many children excitedly sharing their own fishing adventures. We read, “Wishing I Was Fishing” and “Walter the Wily Walleye”, which helped students visualize and understand the importance of our state's aquatic life. Inspired by our discussions, students created underwater scenes featuring their own painted walleyes.
In addition to fish, we talked about how we can all help keep our lakes clean. The students had great ideas on how pollution impacts fish, turtles, frogs, and plants, and they shared creative ways on how to be good stewards of the environment. One child summed it up perfectly: “We need to keep our lakes clean 100% of the time!”
Learning About Loons
Our exploration of Minnesota continued with a focus on our state bird—the loon. We listened to loon calls, read stories like “Little Loon Finds His Voice”, and talked about the fascinating life cycle of these birds. Students were in awe by the way baby loons ride on their parents' backs for protection and learned how humans have built floating nests to support loons in the wild. This learning came to life through art, as students painted beautiful, one-of-a-kind loons.
The Magic of the Lady’s Slipper
Our students were fascinated to learn about Minnesota’s state flower, the Showy Lady’s Slipper. We explored how this rare and beautiful orchid thrives in wetlands and takes years to bloom. The children were amazed to discover that it relies on a unique relationship with fungi to grow. We discussed the importance of protecting native plants and preserving their habitats, fostering a sense of appreciation for the delicate ecosystems around us.
The Beauty of Pine Trees
Minnesota’s towering pine forests provided another exciting topic of exploration. We studied the Norway pine trees found in our state and students used pine needles to create a unique painting. These hands-on activities helped them develop a deeper appreciation for the trees that shape our landscapes and provide habitat for so many creatures.
Small Ways to Extend Learning
For families looking to do something like this at home, here are a few simple activities to explore Minnesota’s natural beauty together:
- Go on an agate hunt: Visit a local beach or riverbed and search for agates. Use a magnifying glass to examine their unique colors and patterns.
- Read Minnesota-themed books: Check out “Agate”, “Wishing I Was Fishing”, or “Little Loon Finds His Voice” from your library to spark conversations about nature.
- Visit a local lake: Observe fish, look for loons, or simply appreciate the beauty of Minnesota’s waterways.
- Practice environmental stewardship: Bring a small bag on your next walk and pick up any litter you find. Talk with your child about why keeping our lakes and land clean is important.
- Create nature-inspired art: Paint a walleye or a loon, or try making rock art with collected stones from your outdoor adventures.
The Impact of Hands-On Learning
This unit on Minnesota has been an incredible journey for our students, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for their home state and the natural world around them. Through hands-on exploration, storytelling, art, and outdoor play, our students are not just learning about Minnesota—they are experiencing it in ways that make a lasting impact.
As we continue through the winter season, we encourage families to get outside, explore, and celebrate the beauty of Minnesota together. Whether it’s through a simple walk, a fishing trip, or a cozy read-aloud, these small moments of connection with nature will inspire lifelong curiosity and stewardship.
